The Okapi (information from Cathy and her partner...)

Task 1.

a. Explain your Living Thing in terms of the four characteristics...

b. How does your LT meet its needs for air, water, shelter and food?

For example...
The okapi is a living thing because it can respond, grow and develop, it's made of one or more cells and it can reproduce.

Respond- The Okapi calf poops only after 4 - 8 weeks of age. This allows the calf to stay hidden and not be sniffed-out by predators.
(The Okapi mother hides its calf before it goes out to search for food); The okapi's predator is the leopard whenever a okapi calf sees one, they crouch down and lie still, its colours make it invisible to the leopard.

Grow and Develop- An Okapi has the same appearance as an adult, but they have a short fringe of hair along their spines, the line will be gone by the time they are 12 to 14 months old.

One or More Cells- the okapi has many different cells. Blood cells, hair cells, skin cells etc...

Reproduce-The Okapi gives a live birth, it has a mating seasons (August - Late October) but if it chooses to it can mate when ever it wants. The fem
ale Okapi gives a live birth to an okapi calf who usually weighs around 36 pounds.

Meeting the need for water- To get its water the okapi finds a stream or a lake.

Meeting the need for air- air is all around the forests the okapi lives in. All the okapi has to do is breath to meet the need for air.

Meeting the need for food- the okapi meets its need for food by searching the forest to find shrubs, grass, leaves, clay, and sometimes, if it can get its hooves on it, charcoal of a tree. ( the inside of a thunder-struck tree) But its favorite treat is onions.

Meeting the need for Habitat- the okapi lives in the dense part of a rain forest in central Africa.

Task 2.
a. Explain the classification of your Living Thing (Kingdom, Phylum, etc)
b. What are the features of your LT that cause it to be classified in the way that it is?

For example...
Kingdom: Animalia
Living things in Kingdom Animalia are multicellular,
eat other living things and plants and have some sort of a
well fixed structure

Phylum: Chordata
The Okapi has a vertabrate. (a backbone)

Class: Mammalia:
The okapi is a warm-blooded animal, it has fur/hair,
and it's females feeds its young milk from it's body.
And believe it or not Mamals have a special ear bone
that only mamals have.

Order: Artiodactyla

Family: Giraffidae
The okapi is in the Giraffidae family with the Giraffe but
nothing else is with it in this family.

This information is on wikipedia for most living things....

Task 3.
a. What are the special features of your animal?
b. How have these adaptations helped your animal to survive?

For example, the okapi has brown fur, strange stripes, white legs, big ears....
How do these things help it to survive?
